줄거리
이태리의 작은 마을 사람들은 그들의 사회가 지역적으로 고립되어서 숨통이 막힐 듯한 느낌을 갖는다. 그들은 외로움으로 가득 차 있고, 삶을 전환시킬 특별한 것을 갈망하게 된다. 초호화 여객선인 황제호가 그들이 사는 해변을 지나게 된다는 말을 들었을 때, 동경심에 사로잡힌 마을 사람들은 보트에 모조리 타고서 열정적인 성지 순례자들처럼 해변에서 줄지어 바다로 나간다. 그리고 여객선을 기다린다. 성적 매력이 넘치는 그라다스카가 자기에게 동정적인 한 친구에게 자신의 불만을 털어 놓는다. 어두운 침묵 속에서 그녀는 황량한 앞날을 생각하고는 조용히 운다. 대부분의 사람들이 보트 속에서 잠들었을 때, 그들은 ‘배가 왔다’라는 고함에 깨어나고 우아한 정령과도 같이, 갑판에 불을 켠 “황제”호가 왕과도 같은 장엄한 모습으로 스쳐 지나간다.
