작년 데뷔 20주년을 맞은 헤비메탈 밴드 메탈리카의 "메탈리카" 앨범 제작과정.
일명 '블랙 앨범'이라고도 불리는 그들의 다섯 번째 정규 앨범으로 플레밍 라스무센 대신 머틀리 크루, 본 조비 등과의 작업으로 유명한 밥 록의 프로듀싱으로 프로그레시브적 요소를 끌어들이는 변화를 시도했다.
그 결과 `Enter Sandman`을 비롯하여 `Sad But True` 등이 대중적인 인기를 얻어 빌보드 앨범차트 1위에 오르기도 했다. 그 외에도 라스 울리히 드럼의 극치를 보여주는 `Holier Than Thou`, 블랙 사바스의 잔재가 남아있는 `My Friend Of Misery`에 발라드 넘버 `Nothing Else Matters` 등 모든 곡들이 섬세하고 웅장하다.
